About My Father is a mediocre culture clash comedy that fails to distinguish itself from similar films. The plot follows Sebastian’s quest for his father’s approval as he plans to propose to his fiancĂ©e. Their visit to Ellie’s affluent family over the 4th of July weekend becomes a catalyst for humorous clashes between their different social classes. However, the humor lacks originality, and the characters on both sides of the culture clash remain shallow and one-note. The film’s only saving grace is the chemistry between Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, although even their performances can only marginally elevate the lackluster material. With a predictable storyline and unremarkable writing, About My Father fails to leave a lasting impression, falling short compared to other films that have tackled similar themes with greater success.
