Simon Curtis’s Downton Abbey: A New Era has enough Easter eggs to show that Julian Fellowes is just as well-versed in silent film history and the mannerisms and rhythms of the British class system. The film suggests that he might be a Ren & Stimpy fan. “Ren’s retirement” is the third season of John Kricfalusi’s animated series. Ren is reminded that he’s 70 years old on his 10th Birthday. This sets off a hilarious sequence of events, where Ren begins to prepare for his death. He writes a will and searches for a coffin. Stimpy, distraught, weeps over Ren’s coffin. Ren then bursts out laughing and says, “I can’t see myself dying!”

This line was uttered by the beloved Downton Abbey character towards the end of A New Era and in response to an identical show of emotion. The words could be directed at the film, but they feel like they are. It’s too full of reheated incidents that it’s difficult to see the film as anything other than fan service.
