As the title suggests, Elvis is a Baz Luhrmann movie. Sometimes frustrating, and sometimes exuberant, but ultimately successfully captures the joy and sorrow of the main character’s story. It’s not as well-balanced as the majority of his films have been, with a focus on the spectacle and visuals over the development of characters. With 159 minutes, the film is over one-half hour, but the closing (which contains archive footage showing the true-life Elvis who sang “Unchained Melody” shortly before his death) will make a teardrop in the eyes.
The film of Robert Luhrmann’s Elvis makes the most egregious error of bio-pics: trying to compress a lengthy amount of time into only a few hours. This rarely works; despite the director’s unusual style, it can cause difficulties. The opening half explores the rise to stardom and the rise to fame of Elvis Aaron Presley (Austin Butler) from humble beginnings as well as his early struggles with moral crusaders, experience in the military and his hilarious film career, which is run with a lot of speed and is dragged on the screen with the pressure of music video. The film’s first half is exhausting due to the pace and disappointing due to the connections and relationships that are hinted at but not explored. There’s a good reason for this film: it is seen from the self-serving perspective of Elvis, his corrupt manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). His recollections of his death are the main premise.
Elvisreaches its highest point in a remake from the 1968 “comeback” TV special that ran on NBC during the Christmas season. It also racked up massive ratings. Then, Luhrmann hits the brakes, allowing the film to slide into more dramatic territory than is typical. In the last half-hour, the characters develop, and the tragic nature of Elvis’s circumstances (arguably made more apparent by the frequent repeating of the line “We’re trapped in a trap” …” in a trap” from “Suspicious minds”) can snowball. The screenplay doesn’t overplay Elvis’s decline and decline, which was largely driven by prescription drugs, and does not dwell on the last years of his life. The main storyline abruptly ends in the period. To watch more movies for free, visit the o2tvseries website.
