The opening of the film is oddly ironic, telling us that the film we’re about to watch is the same one that Andy saw back in 1995, the one that inspired him to imagine acquiring the Buzz Lightyear toy. The only mention of Toy Story is that, despite stealing one of the main characters from the series, the film tries valiantly to stand on its own.
Lightyear takes Generic Sci-Fi Narrative #2 and grafts Star Wars and Star Trek aspects onto it in terms of plot. There are a few minor glitches, but other than that, it very much writes itself, and there isn’t much here that hasn’t been done before, often better. Everyone watching would be out of it by the halfway mark if the number of deliberate and accidental references were turned into a drinking game. Kids won’t be troubled by the persistent sense of familiarity, of course.
In the movie Toy Story, Buzz was portrayed as a kind of endearing bumbling idiot who became close friends with Woody and the other toys. While the “blowhard” part of Lightyear is still present, there is a much smaller amount of what might be described as “loveable.” The adjectives “incompetent” and “arrogant” also come to mind when describing Buzz. His different allies and enemies aren’t able to smooth out his jagged edges as Woody can. Buzz doesn’t feel quite like Buzz, despite the half-dozen times he’s exclaimed, “To infinity and beyond!” Maybe that’s the key idea. Watch Lightyear (2022) only on o2tvseries website.
