Harper is right to feel threatened by every man. “Harper is losing control and cannot distinguish reality from a nightmare” are two perfect foundations for horror movies. The first requires that we never believe Harper sees things that aren’t there. However, the film doesn’t do that. Another gambit is that ” these impossible, eldritch horrors and the multi-faced Everyman beast are a malevolent power actually hunting Harper from old woods.” This is absurd in the context of all the psychological realism. This third act is an absolute disaster, unlike anything else in Garland’s career.
This central problem leads me back to my original point. That is, Men have the problem of elevated horror. This film could be a great horror movie about the terrors in the English countryside. It is viewed from the perspective of a London-based tourist who finds herself initially uneasy and then being actively harmed by the strange cultural practices of the country folk. This folk horror film about rural England’s creepiness at night is reliable. While there isn’t much that Men has to offer, Garland is a skilled director who works with solid collaborators (cinematographer Rob Hardy; editor Jake Roberts). There are many good scenes and at least some memorable scenes.
