Scott Derrickson directs The Black Phone, which expands on Hill’s short story with the same title about the horrendous events of child abduction. Finney (Mason Thames) is the latest victim kidnapped by ‘The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). However, while he is held captive, he starts to receive calls via his broken cell phone. The calls connect him with the other side and previous victims of The Grabber, who all share one goal: to save Finney long enough to kill the evil killer.
Derrickson is no stranger in the horror world. His 2012 film Sinister, analyzed by scientists, was awarded the title “most frightening film ever” (until Rob Savage’s Host was published). Expectations for The Black Phone are high with such a proud resume. The film’s content may not match the expectations, but this is due to its overall tone and intent.
Sinister was all based on scare sequences. The Black Phone is a horror movie that focuses on Finney’s circumstances. There are many dark moments even before Finney is captured. Finney is bullied at school by both his alcoholic father (played with extreme cruelty by Jeremy Davies) and his peers at school. The most disturbing and darkest scenes in the film are those at Finney’s homestead with his father and younger sister, Gwen McGraw (Madeleine McGraw).
These scenes are filled with actual malice and a sense of danger. This is a feeling that doesn’t exist in Finney’s prison. The Grabber, a clownish, eccentric, and creepy, is not as frightening as Finney’s father. However, it’s challenging to fear him entirely. These’scares” in the Hell hole result from perfectly executed jump moments. Derrickson is fully involved in the jump scare movement to create that fear-soaked adrenaline rush for the viewer.
