“The Monkey King” on Netflix falls short of expectations, failing to deliver the desired balance of humor, heart, and action. This safe adaptation of the iconic Chinese character, Sun Wukong, lacks the cultural depth necessary to make it compelling. Director Anthony Stacchi’s take on the hero’s journey lacks narrative substance, occasionally punctuated by martial arts-inspired scenes that struggle to counteract uninspiring dialogue and episodic encounters. While the partnership between the Monkey King and Lin attempts to provide structure, the film struggles to fully engage its audience. Bowen Yang’s performance as the Dragon King injects some energy, yet “The Monkey King” remains overshadowed by Netflix’s more innovative animated ventures. Visit o2tvseries for more!
